Hamilton: A World-Leading Hub for Nuclear Medicine and Radiopharmaceutical Innovation

As part of the LSO Breakfast Road Trip, this virtual session will showcase how the Hamilton region brings together research, commercialization, industry expertise and talent to advance the future of nuclear medicine and radiopharmaceuticals.
Hamilton’s strength in this sector is built on decades of leadership in medical isotope research and production at McMaster University, supported by a strong network of research, clinical, commercialization and industry partners across the region. McMaster continues to invest in the people and infrastructure driving the field forward. In 2026, the Ontario government committed an additional $4.6 million to the McMaster Nuclear Reactor, bringing total provincial investment to $26.9 million and supporting expanded research and isotope production capacity. McMaster is also investing in top research talent, including the appointment of internationally recognized isotope production and radiopharmaceutical researcher Dr. Suzanne Lapi as the Eddie Goldenberg Research Chair in Isotope Production and Radiopharmaceutical Innovation, and Dr. Jonathan McConathy as Chair for Molecular Imaging and Nuclear Theranostics. These appointments are part of McMaster’s broader investment in leading scholars and high-impact research programs, alongside dedicated institutional leadership through Associate Vice-President, Nuclear, Dr. John Preston. Together, these investments in expertise, infrastructure and research capacity are strengthening McMaster’s ability to advance nuclear medicine and radiopharmaceutical innovation for the future.
At MIP, companies and organizations working in radiopharmaceutical development and related technologies are connected to McMaster’s research, talent and innovation ecosystem, creating opportunities for collaboration and commercialization. Recent milestones include the acquisition of Fusion Pharmaceuticals by AstraZeneca for USD $2.4 billion and the opening of AtomVie Global Radiopharma’s new 72,300-square-foot radiopharmaceutical CDMO facility in Hamilton, the largest single site in North America to date.
